from Seattle and Vancouver Canada, Ketchikan has been called Alaska's
First City by the tourism industry. The people of Ketchikan prefer the
nick-name "Totem City" after all the totem poles in the parks
and throughout the city.

be the Ketchikan Visitors Center located at 131 Front Street infront
of cruise ship dock #2
Pick up a map at the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau’s visitor information
center and follow the numbered signs posted along the route to learn
about the history and culture of our community. Several popular
attractions are located along the route, which starts downtown, including
local museums, Creek Street, native cultural attractions, as well as
plenty of shopping and restaurants.
Totem
Heritage Center located at 601 Deermount Street in Ketchikan
AK is another of those favorite destinations that is accessable on
your own. The center collects and preserves totem poles, many of which
are more than 100 years old, and preserves them from many locations
around Ketchikan.
Totem Bight State Historical Park located ten miles
north of Ketchikan via the North Tongass Highway is the place to see
totem poles that have been skillfully carved by artists in Southeast
Alaska, reflect these resources with symbolic characters carved on totem
poles and on the community house at Totem Bight. Just as impressive as
the totems is the park's wooded setting and the coastline. A viewing
deck overlooks the Tongass Narrows with lush rainforest bordering the
rocky coastline.

Take a stroll down Ketchikan's Creek Street on the historical wooden
boardwalk. Experience a little of Ketchikan's history in the well maintained
buildings from its colorful past. During the time
of prohibition and on in later years, many of these buildings on creek
street housed saloons and bordellos. Today, these same buildings house
restaurants, galleries and gift shops that have become popular attractions
for visitors to Ketchikan.
